how my journey began

My name is Kat Moore. I currently live in the Washington D.C. area. I am a graduate of the Brooke Hamblet RYT 200-hour teacher training program and have a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. I work full-time as a preschool teacher, part-time as a lifestyle photographer, and I balance it all with teaching yoga.

Five years ago I was working as a preschool teacher at a marvelous school in Miami. The school had everything you can imagine, but lacked a program on mindfulness. The school graciously allowed me to “do my thing” in the classroom, and that is when Zen Happy was born (although the name did not come until long after).

I started off teaching about mindfulness and meditation through fun examples and stories that resonated with the kids. Then, we progressed to doing yoga; usually involving crazy animal sounds and a long, lavender-scented rest at the end. By the end of that school year we were doing yoga EVERY day (at the students’ request) and participating in “mindful Monday.”

Getting to that point was not easy. I had to let go of my expectations and my agenda and rely solely on what the kids were feeling and doing on their mats. Once I was able to figure out how to tune into them and let THEM help ME teach the class, we began to co-create and make magic. We learned together, we flowed together, and we laughed together.

And this, I learned, is what yoga is all about.

Zen Happy started from humble beginnings and my intentions with the program are to keep it that way; because the program is not about me or the practice. Zen Happy is about more than that. It’s about engaging kids to be themselves. It’s about getting them to move their bodies and pushing them out of their comfort zone. It’s about helping them gain independence and learn new life lessons. It’s about creating stories through movement and using their imagination to grow. Zen Happy is catered to the “whole child.” It is a program that engages their mind, body, and spirit in a way that honors ALL the ways in which children learn.

Zen Happy. More Than Just Yoga.

See you on the mat!
